It
would be hard to find another city which blends ancient
and modern quite so dramatically as Bangkok, and there
are lots of spectacular temples to visit. Shopping
here is an experience in itself, with a tremendous
choice of goods on offer. At night, the city’s
Patpong district is famous for its huge night market,
selling all sorts of fake designer watches, clothes
and handbags at very tempting prices.
Traffic congestion is a problem, but with the introduction of the
Skytrain and the new expressway, journey times have improved. It
is advisable to have the name of your hotel written in Thai when
you are travelling by taxi or tuk tuk (like a rickshaw).
Among the dozens of places to visit is the magnificent Grand Palace,
where the king and queen used to live, but remember that there
are strict restrictions for visiting the palace and certain other
areas, so cover your shoulders and ankles and wear shoes with a
back to them.
