More
than 75 miles of coastline offers white sandy beaches,
coral reefs and natural coves lined with coconut palms,
along with fresh clear water coastal lagoons. Close
to the resort, Puerto Plata is a medium sized city
on the north coast, which has a wonderful range of
holiday amenities. These include the palm fringed ‘ Malecon’ ocean-side
boulevard running the length of the harbour, with a
beautiful 16th century fortress at one end and Long
Beach at its foot.
Surrounding the town’s lovely Central Park are some important
Victorian and Republican buildings and there are several museums,
while on the outskirts is Isabel de Torres Hill National Park.
Here you can take a cable car to the top of the mountain, where
there is a statue of Christ The Redeemer, overlooking a magnificent
panoramic view of the area.
The nearby town of Playa Dorada has nightclubs, casinos and plenty
of shops and the island’s capital of Santo Domingo is noted
for its majestic Spanish renaissance buildings, including the cathedral,
where the remains of Christopher Columbus are purported to rest.
The native amber makes an excellent gift and is the oldest in the
world.
